Stop the War Coalition to Mark 17th Anniversary of the War in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON

This Sunday 7 October is the 17th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan by the US, the UK and several of its allies. According to a conservative estimate, 217,000 Afghans have died as a direct result of the fighting.

Additional UK troops are being deployed to the country, although UK military intervention has been leading to more bitterness and more violence.

Stop the War Coalition is organising a number of activities on the weekend of 7th October to demand the immediate withdrawal of UK troops from Afghanistan. In London a letter of protest is being handed in by leading anti-war movement figures including Brian Eno, Lindsey German, Murad Qureshi, Mary Dobbin and Kate Hudson on Friday 5 October at 5pm at Downing Street. Various other activities are being organised around the country.

Stop the War was founded in September 2001 in the weeks following 9/11, when George W. Bush announced the "war on terror". Stop the War has since been dedicated to preventing and ending the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere. Stop the War opposes the British establishment's disastrous addiction to war and its squandering of public resources on militarism. We have initiated many campaigns around these issues.
