Trump Administration “Rewards” Private Prison Campaign Donors with Government Contracts
WASHINGTON - Following the Trump Administration’s decision to reverse course from the the Obama Administration’s policy on private prisons, money-in-politics watchdog Every Voice released the following statement criticizing the President for rewarding his private prison campaign donors:
“Private prisons are simply immoral, their sole existence being to rake in tax dollars by perpetuating an unequal, racist, and unjust system of mass incarceration,” said David Donnelly, Every Voice president and CEO. “The Trump Administration’s decision to reward the President’s big campaign donors with fat government contracts for these companies, goes to show that the President is willing to put the interests of corporations and the wealthy ahead of sound public policy. This is an about face from his promise to drain the swamp of wealthy special interests and reduce the power of big donors in Washington.”
As USA Today reported in a story today, private prison companies gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to pro-Donald Trump super PACs during 2016 election. In fact, the day after the Obama administration instituted its guidance to phase them out, major private prison GEO Group donated $100,000 to one such group. GEO and Core Civic, formerly known as the Corrections Corporation of America, also donated $250,000 each to Trump’s inauguration committee.
