City of Denton Acts to Defend Fracking Ban
Citizens urge state to defend local control and back off
Statement of Frack Free Denton president Cathy McMullen
DENTON, Texas - "It speaks well of our city that Denton city government today acted to defend the fracking ban. Denton voters enthusiastically passed the ban by almost 20 points. It passed with the majority of Republicans, and with the majority of Democrats. We're glad our city is listening. We wish we could say the same about our state. Instead, legislators like Phil King are twisting themselves inside out trying to explain why overturning a direct vote of the people isn’t ‘big government’. And regulators like Christi Craddick are all but encouraging oil and gas companies to defy the rule of law. The Denton fracking ban is a watershed moment for Texas. If state officials truly support local control and the rule of law, they must defend our community’s fracking ban from political attempts to overturn it. And let the courts decide whether it’s legal, as we are sure it is."
