America’s Path From “I Have a Dream” to “I Have a Drone”
50,000 Signers Kick Off Petition Drive To Ban Weaponized Drones
WASHINGTON - January 16 - RootsAction.org, the national group mobilizing as an independent political force, today sent out an email blast contrasting Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” proclamation with President Barack Obama’s “I Have a Drone” philosophy.
“As President Obama’s inauguration coincides with the observance of Martin Luther King Day,” said RootsAction Campaign Coordinator David Swanson, “we can’t help but be outraged at the Obama Administration’s escalating use of drone killings as a tool of U.S. foreign policy.”
RootsAction has organized a coalition of groups to push for a ban on weaponized drones. Over 50,000 people have already signed a petition, which is now being distributed by RootsAction and more than 35 organizations across the nation. A current list of participating organizations can be found here.
“The president continues to keep the number of people killed and any legal justification for killing them secret,” RootsAction said in the nationwide email statement sent out today.
“He has nominated the architect of his kill list as CIA director, a droneophile as secretary of defense, and an opponent of international law as secretary of state. We need to turn the drone presidency around.”
Norman Solomon, co-founder of RootsAction, founding director of the Institute for Public Accuracy and author of “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death,” said: "By a simple and chilling twist of fate, Obama's second inaugural address lands on the calendar the same day as the national Martin Luther King holiday. Any substantive understanding of King's words and actions must lead to the conclusion that the Obama presidency has become a tragic embodiment of the kind of foreign policy that King denounced."
Norman Solomon’s column, “King: I Have a Dream. Obama: I Have a Drone," appears today on CommonDreams.org.
David Swanson, the host of Talk Nation Radio, whose books include War Is A Lie, will take part in a rally and march against drone wars in Washington, D.C. on January 21, beginning at 9:00 AM at Meridian Hill Park at Florida Avenue and 16th Streets N.W.
"Drones are taking war into new countries, escalating violence, and generating hostility,” Swanson said.
“They are attractive to war makers because they provide the illusion of easily killing particular individuals. But they look more like murder than other modes of war do to the ordinary observer, because they strip away the illusion of sportsmanship. This is either an opportunity to move our nation away from war making or a significant step in our descent into full acceptance of murder as a public policy. The outcome depends on whether people quietly accept this outrage."
