Maine Makes History; Voters Approve Freedom to Marry

PORTLAND - Mainers United for Marriage tonight celebrated a historic victory after Maine voters endorsed the freedom to marry

Maine becomes the first state in the country to approve a citizen’s initiative that allows same-sex couples to receive a marriage license.

“Three years ago, Maine made history as the first state to pass marriage through a state legislature and have it signed into law by the governor. Maine made history again this year when we became the first state to bring a citizen’s initiative to voters in support of the freedom to marry. And we have made history tonight,” said Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Mainers United for Marriage. “For the first time, we have won marriage at the ballot box.”

The Mainers United for Marriage coalition includes more than 200 partners and thousands of volunteers.

“Thanks to the hard work of so many marriage supporters here and across the country, we’ve made it possible for every loving, committed couple in Maine to obtain a marriage license from the state, to stand up before their friends and family, and to pledge to be there for one another through good times and bad, through sickness and health for the rest of their lives,” McTighe said.

“Tonight, here in Maine, we proved that voters can change their hearts and minds if we tell our stories and give our fellow citizens a personal connection to the countless families whose lives are impacted by this debate,” McTighe said. “To all the states out there that have seen marriage stripped away or blocked at the ballot box, take hope from the change that’s taken place over the last three years in Maine.”
