Amnesty International Urges U.S. Government to Demand Concrete Human Rights Progress in U.S.-China Human Rights Dialogue
WASHINGTON - April 26 - In advance of the U.S.-China human rights dialogue, T. Kumar, Amnesty International USA director of international advocacy, issued the following statement:
“When it comes to human rights, dialogue for the sake of dialogue is not enough: the United States needs to urge China for concrete results. The U.S. government should push for a time table on human rights organizations’ access to China, a free media, including internet freedom, abolition of Re-education Through Labor, and an end to executions.
“Immediately after the discussions, the U.S. and China should issue a joint statement outlining the steps that will be taken to improve human rights. If the U.S. government fails to achieve any meaningful improvement as a result of this dialogue, it should take immediate steps to ensure that human rights are part of U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue."
