Protesters to Converge During Major Shale Gas Drilling Conference in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA - October 27 - On Wednesday, November 3rd, residents from across the Marcellus region will unite in Pittsburgh – with the DUG gas industry conference as a backdrop.  While natural gas company executives gather to discuss shale gas drilling at the David Lawrence Convention Center, residents of Allegheny, Butler, Indiana, Washington and Westmoreland counties will raise their voices in concern over a destructive gas drilling feeding frenzy by Marcellus gas drilling companies.

”Pennsylvania has a total of 46,055 square miles.   Approximately  75% of our state - 34,000 square miles -  sits on Marcellus Shale.  Within the next 10 years, the gas industry plans to cover this area with up to 100,000 Marcellus wells.  That’s 2 – 3 wells per every square mile in our state,”  said Debbie Borowiec, a resident of Westmoreland County, PA.  “We should be switching to clean, safe, renewable energy sources, not destroying our state for gas.”

The rally is being organized by Marcellus Protest, [www.marcellusprotest.org], an alliance of western PA residents, building a movement to stop the destruction of the environment and communities caused by Marcellus Shale gas drilling.

As the Marcellus rally begins, the DUG Conference’s Keynote Speaker, Karl Rove, will be addressing its attendees.

"We won't allow the Marcellus gas drilling blitz to go unchecked," said Seth Bush, a University of Pittsburgh student, who is an organizer with Marcellus Protest. "Our air, our land and our future are not for sale."

The Rally begins at 1 p.m., outside of the David Lawrence Convention Center. Speakers include people in urban, suburban  and rural areas who are living with Marcellus drilling near their homes and communities.

Confirmed speakers are: Josh Fox, director of the film Gasland, Stephanie Simmons a bio remediation specialist, state senator Jim Ferlo, Lincoln Place resident Loretta Weir, organic farmer Stephen Cleghorn, Pittsburgh City Council member Doug Shields and Craig Sautner, a Dimock, PA resident. Music will be provided by Pittsburgh singer song writers Justin Sane of AntiFlag, Mike Stout and the Boston band Foxglove Forager.
