Food & Water Watch Welcomes Proposed Revisions to Toxics Bill

Statement from Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch

WASHINGTON

"On April 15, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Representatives Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) and Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) proposed revising the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act, or TSCA. This reform is long overdue.

"Consumers deserve to know that they are purchasing and using products that have been demonstrated safe by manufacturers. This new language in the draft revisions addresses a major shortcoming of the current TSCA, which assumes that chemicals in products are essentially safe until proven dangerous. This has in effect made the American consumers guinea pigs for well over 30 years.

"These reforms, however, are just a start to providing adequate oversight of consumer products sold to Americans. Furthermore, the provision allowing states to have stricter regulations then that of the Federal government must be kept in the bill. Citizens must be allowed to lobby their state governments to strengthen consumer protections where the use and manufacture of chemicals is concerned."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
