Speaker Pelosi Reaffirms Commitment to Passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Says We “Should Not Wait Another Day” to End Raids, Enact “Reasonable” Solution
WASHINGTON - In an interview published today in the nation's largest Spanish-language newspaper, La Opinión, and other ImpreMedia publications, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reasserted her commitment to advancing comprehensive immigration reform in 2010, and expressed continued opposition to immigration raids that tear apart American families.
During the interview, Speaker Pelosi said she "hoped to pass immigration reform this year." She said: "Last week I spoke with the President about the issue, and he reiterated his promise to work with both houses (of Congress) to create a bill that could be passed."
Pelosi has repeatedly indicated that the House will advance an immigration reform bill after the Senate takes it up, but when asked about possible action in the House first she said: "these situations are always up for reevaluation, you devise a strategy." Pelosi also told La Opinión that "we will have the votes" and "The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has taken the lead. I think they feel pretty confident about the numbers, and if they see it that way, I do too."
The interview also touched on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Pelosi said she does not think "we should wait another day before ending these policies. We can't wait for immigration reform to make that happen...When I've complained about this, the response has been that they are not happening as frequently (now)....but as long as this is happening to even one person, we have a problem. There has to be a more reasonable way to enforce the law. A reasonable procedure."
