Equality California Urges President Obama to Take Action on Federal Prop. 8 Case

Equality California filed an amicus brief supporting the federal challenge of Proposition 8

SAN FRANCISCO

Today,
Equality California renewed its call for President Obama to take action
on the federal court challenge of Proposition 8. Yesterday the deadline
passed for third parties to file amicus briefs in the case weighing the
constitutionality of Proposition 8, a state referendum that stripped
same-sex couples of the freedom to marry.

In
response to the president's lack of visibility on the issue, Equality
California Executive Director Geoff Kors issued the following
statement:

"We are deeply disappointed
with President Obama's continued failure to take a firm stand against
Proposition 8, which threatens to demolish our country's core pillars
of democracy and freedom."

"Although the
deadline to file an amicus brief supporting the federal challenge of
Proposition 8 passed yesterday, it is not too late for the President to
take action on this grave injustice facing California's same-sex
couples. We call on President Obama to urge the court to strike down
this fundamentally unfair law by filing a brief in the court of appeals
when the case advances. Proposition 8 is a clear violation of the
federal constitution, and it is the court's job to protect minorities
from having their rights taken away from a slim majority at the ballot
box. President Obama can make a difference in this case, and we urge
his administration to act with urgency."
