Environmentalist Back in Jail Days After Writing About His Secretive Prison Unit for HuffPost
I was supposed to meet Daniel McGowan for coffee today, and got an email from him last night that his work pass was denied. The revocation of his pass was a surprise, because McGowan has done everything possible to adjust himself to life post-prison, including securing a job at a law firm, and reporting to work and to his halfway house every day on time. However, he expected to be able to go back to work on Friday. Instead, he was taken into custody. He is now imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City.

Fukushima Nuclear Cooling System Goes Down (Again)
A cooling system inside one of the reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant failed once again on Friday, highlighting the ongoing nuclear catastophe at the plant—which reports say will take decades to decommission. A TEPCO official said that they had lost the ability to cool radioactive fuel rods in one of the plant's crippled reactors for roughly three hours—the second failure of the system in three weeks. If the cooling system fails for an exteneded period of time, a nuclear metldown could occur.

Following Protest, UN Suspends Assistance in Gaza Strip
The UN's relief agency in Gaza has suspended its cash assistance program in the Gaza strip after protesters on Thursday stormed their offices. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) provides both cash, food, and other forms of direct assistance to nearly 800,000 Palestinian refugees living inside Gaza. That figure accounts for approximately two-thirds of the population. Though the head of UNRWA said food assistance would continue, the suspension of cash aid will affect approximately 25,000 people per day.
