Believing his own imitation of a statesman, Pence did an hour-long stunt visit to Atlanta's St Patrick's Day parade, which was ready for him. Twitter photo
Another day, another preposterous charade by a gang of inept autocrats who don't seem to get the concept of irony, else why would they choose an ungodly homophobe, misogynist, bully, bigot, enemy of marriage equality, slasher of women's health funds and supporter of an egregious pray-away-the-gay Conversion Therapy dubbed “brutal" and "inhuman" to announce ongoing support for an HIV/AIDS relief program his boss/ evil twin actually opposes? Thus did Mike Pence appear Thursday before a White House crowd marking Saturday's 30th World AIDS Day to say Trump will soon sign a Senate-passed bill reauthorizing the Bush-era PEPFAR for five years.
Of course this is the same Trump who was blocked by the Senate when he tried to cut that program's funding. Also the same Trump who has fired all the members of his HIV/AIDS Council, gutted HIV/AIDS resources and other vital health services, is criminalizing drug use and opioid addiction while cutting funding for treatment - both of which actions, health experts say, will increase HIV rates and the likelihood of major HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks - and once hilariously joked that Pence's view of the gay community was that he “wants to hang them all.” But yeah, great work Donnie and never mind the grotesque discrepancies.
Even so, for once Pence's staggering hypocrisy might trump Trump's. Over the hate-filled years, he's argued HIV-prevention funding should only go "to those seeking to change their sexual behavior,” opposed LGBT anti-discrimination laws, insisted global funds fighting AIDS go to "the timeless values of abstinence and marital faithfulness...the cure for what ails the families of Africa,” defended marriage between a man and woman as "the backbone of our society...It wasn’t our idea, it was God’s," defunded Planned Parenthood and Indiana's only HIV testing center, threatened to jail same-sex couples and passed 2013's Religious Freedom Restoration Act so that God-fearing souls could ban godless gay devils from their business.
Most disastrously, in 2015 he enabled Indiana's worst and entirely preventable HIV outbreak by drastically cutting public health funds and then, when the crisis hit, delaying a needle exchange to which he was "morally opposed" until he "prayed on it" and agreed to it - a delay that both spread the disease and created what critics called "a roadmap of what to do (to) create a public health crisis." Still, there he was this week, blithely praising the faithful who fight AIDS and "put hands and feet on their faith to bring hope and healing." Twitter, which neither forgets nor forgives, was unmoved. Some compared Pence's presence to Hitler at a Holocaust memorial or the Grinch talking up Christmas. One had a more rhapsodic take: "May you be haunted and slapped by the ghost of Freddie Mercury."
