Because the inglorious times sure seem to call for Sacha Baron Cohen's rude and brazen trolling, we just got the spectacle of Roy Moore - moron, racist, bigot, sex offender and can you believe actually a former Alabama chief justice and (admittedly failed) U.S. Senate candidate - on the latest episode of Cohen's Showtime series Who Is America? Who, indeed. Sunday night, it was Moore being interviewed by Cohen's macho Israeli anti-terrorism expert Col. Erran Morad, briefly promoted to General, who wanted to boast about Israel's cool new technology that can unearth Hamas tunnels and, in a stunningly incongruous change of subject that went right past the deer-in-headlights, wholly deserving Moore - pedophiles.
What's weirder: Moore declaring Alabama has always been about freedom and equality? Morad's deadpan description of detectable hormones from perverts' sweat? Moore, eyes glazed and smile frozen, setting off the pedophile beeper Morad waves around him? Moore's sputtered defense, "I've been married...I have never had an accusation of such things"? Moore's earlier protest, when he found he'd been duped, that "America is a proud Nation which sprang from humble beginnings and a strong belief in God, virtue, and morality"? Morad, nonetheless, remained gracious. "I was honored," he wrote after the segment, "that ladies' man Roi Moore took time away from his busy schedule of hanging round shopping malls to talk to me." Oh, America.
