A belated 98th birthday to Lawrence Ferlinghetti, indefatigable poet, publisher, anti-Fascist, First Amendment activist, painter, patron saint of the Beats, living monument to the arts, "old-ass anarchist" and dazzlingly prescient speaker of truth. He wrote "Pity the Nation" ten years ago. It could be today. "Pity the nation whose people are sheep/ and whose shepherds mislead them./ Pity the nation wh ose leaders are liars/ whose sages are silenced,/ and whose bigots haunt the airwaves."
