A moment of welcome perspective amidst our own gaudy circus: Defiant Londoners have summoned grace, strength  and solidarity in the wake of last week's Westminster attack that killed four and injured 40. Hundreds of residents of a stalwart city that survived World War Two bombings and IRA attacks posted keep-calm-and-carry-on messages online under hashtags like #We Stand Together and #We Are Not Afraid. On Sunday, scores of mostly Muslim women, wearing blue to symbolize peace, held hands to form a human chain across Westminister Bridge in a show of unity meant to reject "an attack on all of us." "It's a very small gesture," said one, "but life is made up of small gestures."

The day after the attack, multi-faith leaders, politicians, residents and tourists likewise came together in Travalgar Square for a candlelight vigil led by London's Muslim Mayor Sadiq Khan - whose calm, eloquence and very existence, many say, is the best counter-argument to the terrorist narrative that the West is at war with Islam. Khan praised the city's diversity, called on people to stand together, and steadfastly proclaimed, "We will not be cowed by terrorism" before going off to consult with political leaders in Paris and Brussels. Earlier, Kahn brushed off like a pesky, dirty fly an inane diss by mini-Trump Jr. by noting he had more important things to do than respond to such idiocy. Because, yes: Despite that deranged Time interview, there is still gravitas and lucidity in the world.
