Today is the 151st birthday of Nellie Bly - born Elizabeth Cochran - the groundbreaking 19th century investigative journalist,  suffragette and globe-trotter whose writings focused on the disenfranchised, from workers to insane asylum inmates to homeless women in a New York shelter, "the last step but one." Her work is collected here and here, and today's Google doodle celebrates her with a song by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O: “Someone’s gotta stand up and tell them what a girl is good for.” .
