Archie Takes A Bullet Against Homophobia and Gun Nuts

RIP Archie Andrews, the 73-year-old, red-headed, all-American comics icon who died today stopping an assasination attempt on his friend Kevin Keller, an openly gay senator campaigning for gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting. The death of the good guy who consistently remained "not a superhero (but) a person" marks the much-anticipated conclusion of a "Life with Archie" series that followed grown-up renditions of Archie, Betty, Veronica et al into today's often fraught world. His creators praised the end as "a tonally perfect tribute to a character who has always put his friends first." Less than shockingly, right-wing critics blasted his "death by homophobia" at the hands of an unstrung gun freak because that and other ridiculous fantasies dreamed up by gun-hating elitist liberals could obviously never happen.

"He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale, but the best of all of us."
