Really, Guys?

Tell us again what century this is. The election of Anne Hidalgo as - yes: the first female - mayor of Paris was greeted with this graphic on MSNBC and a host of other wow-the-first-ever-girl! exclamations in the press. Never mind the more salient points: She's the Socialist daughter of Spanish immigrants who has promised green spaces, expanded child care, greater economic equity and more public transportation in a victory in marked contrast to an alarming rise of right-wing parties elsewhere in France. To the (still predominantly male) media on her girl-ness: Get over it already.

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.
