Triangle Shirtwaist Fire: Too Much Blood Has Been Spilled
Today marks the 103rd anniversary of New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in which 146 workers, most young immigrant women, died trapped in a sweatshop inferno behind doors locked by owners worried about theft and unions, but not workers' lives. The fire was a milestone in labor history, prompting the rise of unions and improved working conditions. Now, with unions faltering and abuses ongoing in our now-overseas sweatshops, hear the fiery Rose Schneiderman of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, who in 1911 protested "these poor burned bodies" at a time when "the life of men and women is so cheap and property is so sacred." With God On Our Side: Raffling Rifles, Silencing Women, Damning Bill Maher and Gifting Us A Candidate Who's A Christian Deliverer (And Rapist and Felon)
Ever wonder why God allows so much bad stuff to happen in the world? Turns out he/she is busy fulfilling right-wing wet dreams. To wit: A New York pastor gave away an AR-15 during services just like "we've always done (since) Jesus walked the shores of Galilee,” an Arizona pastor urged women not to say "amen" because God said "let the women learn in silence with all subjection;" a creationist asked his longsuffering God to damn atheist Bill Maher to die not once but twice "with fire and brimstone;" and Glenn Champ, a California contractor "of all-American Christian heritage" who rejects "ungodly legislation drafted by demonic terrorist extremists," is running for governor as "a deliverer to lead the way back to righteousness." He is also a registered sex offender after a decade in prison for voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with intent to commit rape. His slogan is, "Doing Things God's Way." "CHAMP represents a new breed of Christian soldier moving forward in the army of the lord, on the highway of righteousness, stomping on the devil’s head, with a new song of righteousness’s in our hearts. Amen."
