As the Supreme Court prepares to rule on the right of the Hobby Lobby or any other private, allegedly God-fearing company to deny women reproductive freedom, a group of progressive nuns has annnounced their support for women's access to contraception under Obamacare, arguing that to do otherwise is "an affront to women’s moral agency" - a stand in marked contrast to the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in Colorado, the Catholic bishops and other Catholic groups who evidently believe the Bible says the only righteous woman is a pregnant woman and she should shut up about it already. In a statement announcing their support, the National Coalition of American Nuns argued that "religious freedom means that each person has the right to exercise their own religious beliefs," not that "an individual or a corporation gets to impose their religious beliefs on their employees." Adds Sister Donna Quinn, who in the past has called for the impeachment of Mssrs. Bush and Cheney, volunteered as an abortion clinic escort and been regularly dubbed "notorious" in mainstream Catholic media, "It isn't freedom when a woman can be held hostage by the owner of a business." The nuns have started an online petition, and plan a Faith Rally at the Supreme Court on March 25, the day of oral arguments for the mandate challenges. Brave souls.
