In a rare concession, Israel has scrapped its plan to forcibly relocate 40,000 Bedouin citizens from their unrecognized villages in the Negev to state-planned townships - shades of South Africa - as part of a decades-long strategy to "transform the Bedouin into an urban proletariat.” But the relentless erosion of Bedouin life goes on daily: demolition of houses and entire villages, confiscation of land, harrassment of shepherds and construction of another SodaStream plant near a planned township suffering the same poverty, unemployment and lack of services as the rest. A dispiriting microcosm of Israel's unbridgeable gap between have and have-not is the comfortable Jewish settlement where the Goldog pet kennel and cemetery boasts the many "civil-engineered trappings of placid suburban life" - water, electricity, waste removal.
