For some reason - the spectacle of a black man in authority speaking on national teevee, maybe? - the State of the Union always brings out the crazy. Thus, last night we had an uncivil Texas Rep. Steve Stockman, who gives out Obama Barf Bags for campaign contributions and recently disappeared for a few weeks, walking out mid-speech; a thug-like New York Rep. Michael Grimm, who reportedly has a history of doing this sort of thing, threatening to throw a reporter "off this fucking balcony" for daring to ask a question he didn't like; and an incoherent Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, after viciously tweeting about King Obama, appearing on Rachel Maddow in a jaw-dropping exchange in which he charged Obama "ran against the military by bringing them home" and also caused income inequality and anyway executive orders are "lawless" and Hillary! and Benghazi! and more Benghazi! and besides Rachel is just a "cheerleader" - prompting from her a perfect, memorable, eyebrow-raising response that almost made up for all the rest of it, but not quite. More on the Republican clown car, and the notion we're down to two branches of government.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'” - Isaac Asimov
