Ukraine Is Getting Ever-Uglier

Abby Zimet

In the wake of at least two deaths in increasingly violent clashes between police and anti-government demonstrators, a fragile truce is holding in Kiev even as protests - and vitriol - spread. The ugliness is captured in a recently surfaced video that shows police thugs stripping naked a bruised protestor, making him pose for pictures in the freezing cold, then hitting and kicking him before letting him board a bus for jail. The video - echoes of Abu Ghraib, Nazis, ad infinitum - prompted an official apology for "the unacceptable actions of the people in police uniform." Somehow you get the feeling, from the many dramatic pictures and from history, that it's not the first time. Warning: disturbing.
