Christopher Columbus Was Awful, But This Guy Was Not

The man we honor today with his own holiday, notes The Oatmeal - based in large part on research in Howard Zinn's People's History - was "a soiled, wretched horror show of a human being...a sex slaver, mass murderer and champion of sociopathic imperialism...the father of transatlantic slave trade (who) discovered the New World much like a meteorite discovered the dinosaurs.” He helpfully suggests we instead celebrate Bartolomé de las Casas, a flawed but admirable Columbus contemporary, thus remedying a holiday he calls, "not an American tradition (but) a recent mistake."
