Jailed Pussy Riot punker Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has launched a hunger strike to protest hellish prison conditions worthy of the gulags of Solzhenitsyn's era. In a long open letter to The Guardian, she describes freezing temperatures, broken bathrooms, slavishly working 16 hours a day sewing police uniforms, being fed stale bread, rotten potatoes and watered-down milk and being made to feel "like a filthy animal without any rights."
