You've Had Your Debate: UK Security Officials Destroyed Guardian Hard Drives

In the wake of UK officials detaining Greenwald's partner David Miranda, an incredible account by The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger of a recent encounter with government officials who demanded the paper surrender or destroy all their material on Edward Snowden, or face a shutdown via the kind of prior restraint that's not supposed to happen in a democracy. What he was told: "You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back."

"The state that is building such a formidable apparatus of surveillance will do its best to prevent journalists from reporting on it. But I wonder how many have truly understood the absolute threat to journalism implicit in the idea of total surveillance...Those colleagues who denigrate Snowden or say reporters should trust the state to know best (may) one day have a cruel awakening. One day it will be their reporting, their cause, under attack."
