This Is My Government

Rushing headlong to pass egregious abortion restriction measures, the Texas House paused just long enough to throw out, with the help of some burly state troopers, a young woman offering a great and furious rant on their war against women. Hear her, see the transcript of what else she would have said if she didn't get thrown out, follow the livestream, and hear the bawdy, 80-something-year old Helen of Margaret and Helen sound off on the "hypocritical bullies" doing this.

"Margaret, if my vagina could shoot bullets it would have fewer regulations on it...I am old enough to remember what happens to women who don’t have access to safe, legal abortions.  But I guess if you don’t like women, killing a few is of no concern...And for those women out there, who think this is really about saving innocent babies, let me assure you it’s not. Republican politicians have passed legislation to define pregnancy as beginning at fertilization, which means most types of birth control are now defined as causing abortions.  Are they saving babies or just calling you a slut?"

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
