Oh We Wish: Hantoush, My Lamb, Spread Your Wings!
Saleha Hamdeen, a 14-year-old Bedouin Palestinian who lives in a tent with 70 sheep amidst land stolen and mined, has won the international Hans Christian Andersen Award for her fairy tale "Hantoush," about the flying sheep who helps her escape the sound of Israeli bullets to play World Cup soccer in Barcelona. Heartbreaking. "Sh-h-h, get closer! I will tell you my secret. I have a flying sheep! His name is Hantoush. He is black (with) 2 wings he hides under his fleece. He takes them out when I want to escape and whisper in his ear, “Hantoush, my lamb, spread your wings from under your wool!” I sing this in his ear when the soldiers start shooting! Then, I climb on his back and ride to the skies."
