Guns, as always, in the news: A fugitive former cop and alleged killer called armed and dangerous by the LAPD - "He knows what he's doing - we trained him" - a three-year-old boy killed with a pink gun he thought was a toy, two children and a mother dead, two young men. With awful numbers to contextualize them - more deaths in this country from guns than all our wars - and a graphic project that documents and makes real those too many lives lost to guns. Update: NRA officials this weekend sneeringly dismissed "the Connecticut effect" - our collective horror at Newtown - and vowed they'd return to power. Creeps.

Head Full of Doubt: Two Young Phelps Leave Westboro's World of Hate
Two granddaughters of infamous crank Fred Phelps, heir apparent Megan Phelps-Roper and her sister Grace, have announced online their departure from the bile-spewing Westboro "church." Megan - once described in a profile as "a peppy, goofy, happy" young woman who believes "you and the rest of this filthy, perverted nation will be spending a long fiery eternity burning in hell" - acknowledges that "we’ve done and said things that hurt people" and after so much hate asks a tough question: "Where do you go from there?" "In a city in a state in the center of a country lives a group of people who believe they are the center of the universe; they know Right and Wrong, and they are Right....As parents, they are attentive and engaged, and the children learn their lessons well. This is my framework."
