On Twinkies, Ho Hos, Hedge Funds and Greed
Hostess Brands - maker of the iconic Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Wonder Bread and other marvels of chemical engineering - is closing. Much media coverage is blaming strikes by union bakery workers, who had rejected drastic contract concessions. But the union blames greed by Wall Street owners and mismanagement by a company that had already gone through two bankruptcies and six CEOs. The best tweet: "The only food that can survive an apocalypse will no longer be made. Well played Mayans. Well played." Also, the Twinkie deconstructed to remind you what you'll be missing . Update: Twinkies may yet survive. At the urging of a judge, both sides have agreed to mediation.

Dump Trump, Scram Ann, Kick Out Rick, Et Al
Glimmers of hope in a modest swing of the national pendulum away from thuggery toward reason. Over 620,000 people have signed a petition urging Macy's to sever ties with racist buffoon Donald Trump; there's a move to impeach Florida's Rick Scott for crimes against voting and much else; and even (some) Republicans are deciding they can't stomach Ann Coulter or right-wing blame games. Best, in More, a brighter legislative future beckons. It's not much, but this week we'll take it.

Shockingly Less Than: Choosing a Dying Fetus Over A Living Woman
Savita Halappanavar, a Hindu dentist, died after she arrived at an Irish hospital miscarrying early in a wanted pregnancy, spent three days in agony repeatedly asking for a termination of her non-viable fetus, and was denied because, "This is a Catholic country." A woman left to suffer and die, her life sacrificed in the name of an ideology that deems a non-viable fetus more important than a living, breathing, 31-year-old woman - this is a horror. She deserved to live. Video of protests with an urgent message: Never again. "It was all in their hands, and they just let her go."
