After two years of planning, Tampa area sheriff David Gee says he's "tactically ready" for the unwashed protesting masses he expects to descend on the GOP convention. He has emptied a 1,700-bed jail, now being transformed into a color-coded "one-stop booking, detention center." His "boots on the ground" will be "a fine-tuned machine" with "a laser focus - a peaceful and purposeful RNC." What could possibly go wrong? "To the agitators and anarchists who want only to bring a dark cloud to this event, let me be clear: criminal activity and civil disturbances will not be tolerated."

Somebody Hold Us All
To remind us of the life and death battle so many face each day, an extraordinary photo of Aileen Crimmings O'Brien Graef, who died today at 46 of breast cancer. Shortly before she died, her brother brought her dog Jethro to the hospice to say goodbye. At least 1 in 8 American women will get breast cancer. From Boing Boing .
