If It Were Up to Me

Abby Zimet

More gun-fueled horror, this time in Colorado. More scary news of online weapons available to anyone anytime. More sensible calls from Bloomberg and many others for attention to be paid in this election season. More surreal juxtapositions as tragedy meets a still-gun-drenched culture: The brother of shooting victim Jessica Ghawi linked to a playful YouTube video of her, next to which ran an ad for the video game "Combat Arms" featuring the caption, "Get Armed." More and more. And Cheryl Wheeler still gets it right.

(The misspelling on the Wheeler video is unfortunate. Such is the magical but imperfect world of the Internet.)

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
