It has been five years since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip and Israel tightened its blockade in what is widely viewed as the collective punishment of Gaza's 1.7 million residents. The Guardian undertook a 24-hour live-blog to show everyday life in the shadow of what one activist calls "the hijacking of a piece of land, the de-development, the reversal, of a society."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.
