Still In Vietghanistan
With just 23% of Americans now supporting the war in Afghanistan and ongoing news of atrocities by U.S. forces, a former marine in Vietnam and current Veteran For Peace wonders why people ask him about the "rules of war" - as though there's "a proper and civilized way to conduct warfare" - and not why Afghans are dying in the first place. Astute Will Hunting, a few years back, echoes him. "If we are going to talk about rules of war...we have to start with the powerful people who chose to put those soldiers there. The No.1 war crime is starting a war...All other war crimes emanate from that first crime."

The Last Weapon
It's hard to tell from the lack of western media coverage - the N.Y. Times is a rare exception - but protests are mounting as two Palestinian hunger strikers near death. UN chief Ban Ki-moon finally spoke up after protesters closed down UN offices in Ramallah. Both Amnesty International and Physicians for Human Rights have issued urgent appeals. And thousands - recorded by a few vital cameras - are in the streets.
