Bistro at the Bijou: Fried Chicken, No Hate

Abby Zimet

Out to show that two wrongs in fact can make a right, the owner of a Knoxville, Tenn. brunch place refused to serve one Stacey Campfield, a right-wing state senator who authored the "Don't Say Gay" law, has blamed the AIDS virus on a gay airline pilot having sex with monkeys, and says the disease cannot be sexually contracted by heterosexuals. His remarks prompted Martha Boggs, the straight married owner of Bistro at the Bijou, to ask him to leave. In response, he took to his blog to compare himself to blacks during the civil rights struggle and Jesus who, he modestly noted, said, 'If you are not welcomed in a town, shake the dust off your feet and move on.' The punchline: The Bistro's on Gay Street.

"I feel like he's gone from being stupid to being dangerous, and I wanted to stand up to him." - Boggs
