The Final Indignity

The gruesome revelation that the Air Force dumped the incinerated partial remains of at least 274 American troops in a Virginia landfill - including those of Marine Sgt. Daniel Angus, whose arm was sawed off to fit - inspires an impassioned rant on the myth of American exceptionalism, the "big, fat, fancy, shiny" lie that we take care of our own. Not true, says William Rivers Pitt: "We hurl our children into the meat grinder of meaningless warfare," and then they are thrown away, the living and the dead, "like garbage."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.

Because of people like you, another world is possible. There are many battles to be won, but we will battle them together—all of us. Common Dreams is not your normal news site. We don't survive on clicks. We don't want advertising dollars. We want the world to be a better place. But we can't do it alone. It doesn't work that way. We need you. If you can help today—because every gift of every size matters—please do.
