You Did This To My Brother

The condition of anti-war veteran Scott Olsen, shot in the head in Oakland, has been upgraded to 'fair,' but outrage at the police and actions in response are stilll building. A Marine buddy posted this image on Reddit, which went viral; Iraq Veterans Against the War is taking donations for Olsen's medical costs;  OccupyMARINES is calling for support for the Occupy movement, "this wondrous event"; veterans are offering training to occupiers; Occupy Oakland is calling for a general strike Nov. 2. Oh yeah, and today, amidst much anger, Oakland officials voted to close five elementary schools due to budget shortfalls. We wonder how much they spent on all that riot gear and weaponry for all those cops?
“I see this young man and I picture the men and women that stood beside me during my time in, and the men and women that stand in those places today. I know what (Olsen) went through to become a Marine, what he ate for breakfast most days and how long he was able to talk to his parents with his $10 phone card in a shack in Iraq. He is my brother." - Marine Jay C Gentile.

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
