Sweet Spirit

Activist and Princeton professor Cornel West joined the Occupy Wall Street protest on its 11th day to applaud the “sweet spirit in this place” and denounce “corporate plutocrats who squeeze the democratic juices out of this country.” Meanwhile, the U.K.'s Guardian is working to reconstruct the NYPD's Anthony Bologna pepper-spraying protesters, and is seeking video,  information or eyewitness accounts of the incident.

“I am so blessed to be here,” West said. “You got me spiritually break-dancing on the way here. Because when you bring folk together, of all colors, of all cultures, of all genders, of all sexual orientations the elite will tremble in their boots. And we will send a message that this is the U.S. Autumn, responding to the Arab Spring.”

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
