Tuesday's earthquake elicited an intriguing mix of reactions - freaked out to ho hum - from the animals at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, often minutes before it hit. Apes shrieked, belched, collected their kids and climbed to the top of their fake trees. Other creatures hid, huddled, sounded alarms or took to the water. GOP Town Halls: No Opinions/Evidence of Same
Participatory democracy, a swell idea, is fading fast. 60% of Congress isn't holding town halls - and many that are have a Stalinist ring. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) only took pre-screened questions, banned cameras "for security purposes," and boasted the spectacle of beefy guys with ear-pieces confiscating cameras from constitutents who dared cite their Constitutional rights. Happily, rowdy protesters turned up anyway asking for jobs not cuts.

Jack Layton's Final Words: Hope Is Better Than Fear
Canadians are mourning the death of Jack Layton, 61, opposition leader and by all reports a good and deeply progressive guy. In a final letter shortly before his death, he urged the people of his country to be their better selves. "My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."
