Bon Voyage: Billionaire Libertarians Want to Set Up Their Own Ayn-Rand-Ish Floating City States

Peter Thiel - Pay Pal founder, early Facebook investor and one of too many people in this country with weird ideas and more money they know what to do with - is supporting an initiative by the Seasteading Institute to create "a frontier for experimenting with new ideas for government" in the form of floating oil-rig-like countries featuring libertarian policies like no welfare, no minimum wage, looser building codes and few restrictions on weapons. To this we say, What the hey, go for it - but before you go maybe you could set aside a few million for hungry kids or homeless folks or schools or jobs or.....

"There are quite a lot of people who think it's not possible," Thiel said. "That's a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late."
