Anders Breivik: We Must Look Our Best For the Shoot

Abby Zimet

Glimmers of the narcissistic, paranoid pathology of Norway shooting suspect Anders Breivik emerge from his 1,500-page manifesto, A European Declaration of Independence, which ranges from racist rantings to detailed attack instructions to grooming and costume tips, complete with photos of him in uniforms and insignia of an imaginary military. There are also many references to right-wing Islamophobic bloggers and think tanks, who clearly influenced him. Lesson here: Words have power, and you never know who's listening.

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
