Rest In Hell Osama and Other Nuanced Responses

I remember writing local response stories after 9/11 and coming upon a pickup festooned with, "Exterminate the Brutes!" Now we have, already, Fun T-Shirts that jubilantly proclaim, "Obama Got Osama!" Yes, but. Memo to the grinning oblivious thousands who hit the streets last night armed with beer, flags and victory signs: This is not a football game. Carnage, misery, hatred and two pointless wars hover in the air. Chris Hedges is eloquent on "the disease of empire" at the core of our historic narrative; he describes being at Ground Zero and watching "as a nation drank deep from that very dark elixir of American nationalism."

This is the world we live in. This is the world we cover.
