Hungry In America
Just back from a food distribution event. About 200 people were expected. Over 600 turned up. Despite the truckloads of food, we ran out. At the end, people stood in line mournfully eyeing the last canned dregs and dented cereal boxes, trying to decide if it was worth it. Maine is poor, but our county isn't. Yet there are 49 food pantries and soup kitchens here. The head of Viacom should go to one. They're here, here , here. Go, give, count your blessings.

Despite most of your hard times, CEOs at the country's 200 biggest companies earned 20% more last year than their equally undeserving year before. From Mother Jones , the top ten most absurdly overpaid executives. At the top: Viacom's Philippe Dauman, whose 149% raise gave him $84.5 million. Read it and rage; then, hopefully, act.

The Hateful Circus Comes to Town But Shoots Itself In the Foot
Where to start? Florida's uber-wacko, Quran-burning, so-called pastor Terry Jones is in Michigan to hold an anti-Muslim rally to protest the imaginary threat of Sharia law. He came "in peace" but brought his .40 caliber handgun anyway. Said gun went off in his car. It killed his floorboard and any semblance of sense in any of this. You can ignore him, or you can do what Detroit political and religious leaders are doing : Say no way.

Having had to fight for medical care for the mounting illnessess they face, thousands of 9/11 first responders are about to endure a final, GOP-sponsored insult - their names being run through a FBI terrorism watch list before they can get compensation. Unreal. “Is the idea that a terrorist stayed to help clean up? And then stayed all these years to try and get benefits? In all the things I’ve seen out of Washington, this probably takes the cake.”
