Will Arizona Senate Leader Welcome President Obama or "Require Papers"?
In light of President Obama's trip to Tucson tomorrow, many Arizonans are wondering if State Senate President Russell Pearce (R-Mesa) will be on hand to usher in a new era of civility in the state. A month ago Pearce, one of the main architects of the state's SB 1070 anti-immigration law, infamously joked : "I can tell you that the best thing about 1070 is that Obama may not be visiting Arizona because we actually require papers now."

"You Can't Outsmart Crazy"
It was moving and somehow healing to see a shaken Jon Stewart struggle to "make sense of this senseless thing" in a sober, unpolished monologue on the Arizona shootings . Rejecting simple answers, he stressed the human cost of the tragedy, cited the "complex ecosystem of influences" we inhabit, and gently noted that words, especially toxic ones, have power. "I think it's a worthwhile goal not to conflate our political opponents with enemies if (only) to draw a distinction between the manifestos of paranoid madmen and what passes for acceptable political and pundit speak."
