This and the front photo show Austrian paratroopers with dogs; the UK mission is hush-hush.

First came the news that, having spent $19 billion on drones, metal
detectors and other bomb-finding technology in Iraq and Afghanistan, the
Pentagon reported that nothing works as well as a dog's nose. Now, taking a cue from US special forces, UK paratroopers are parachuting
dogs with cameras on their heads into Taliban strongholds to help find
and attack armed insurgents, which like almost all news coming out of
those wars sounds both stupid and cruel.

The best bomb-sniffers.

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
