One More Clown

Brazil has elected
to its legislature Tiririca, a reportedly illiterate TV clown whose
campaign ads urged, "It couldn't get any worse - vote for me," and who
won more votes than any other candidate. His election was widely viewed
as a protest vote against Brazil's corrupt politics as usual, but he may
be prevented
from serving if he cannot pass a literacy test. This is kinda funny.
It's also, for those of us who retain some faith in the electoral
process, kinda sad.

"If you vote for me, I'll be in
Brasilia, and I'll be in reality doing the thing that our life, that our
Brazil - our moment, that thing, that we have..." - from a campaign ad.
