Commies Still Not Cool

Commies Still Not Cool

Abby Zimet

A popular, self-professed Communist history teacher in New York has been officially banned from city schools after taking a group of students on a non-school-sponsored trip to Cuba in 2007, meaning it took the city three years to decide they were pissed. Nathan Turner had led such trips before, got Pastors for Peace
to sponsor it after his principal cancelled it, and told parents what
was up. He wanted "to see Castro one more time before he died." Turner
resigned in 2008 and is now teaching at-risk kids in New Orleans about
urban farming and nutrition, so he's clearly still a very dangerous guy.

Independent media has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies.   Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook.  Never before has independent media been more endangered.  If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support our critical Winter campaign now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing.
