All the News That's Fit To Describe in Palatable Terms

Glenn Greenwald reports on a new study from Harvard finding that
America's four largest newspapers routinely and unequivocably described waterboarding
as "torture" until the U.S. was found to be using it - at which point
they stopped. The study also found mainstream news sources commonly
calling waterboarding "torture," which it is, only when other people
were doing it.

"(The study) documents the exact process by which the political
class convinces itself and others that bad and illegal things are, by
definition, only what those Bad, Other Foreign Countries do, but never
ourselves."

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
