Brand Israel: Vibrant Diversity and House Demolitions
To highlight the over 24,000 Palestinian homes destroyed by Israel and the Occupation they symbolize, Jews for A Just Peace in North Carolina set up a demolition tableau to protest a dance festival performance by an Israeli dance company that they charge serves as cover for Israeli abuses. The performance was part of a "Brand Israel" PR campaign to reshape Israel's image. Video here. Watch the spectators' faces. Residents of a Nebraska meat-packing town have voted to banish illegal immigrants from jobs and rental homes, though thank goodness the murky language allows for "casual labor for domestic tasks," so it seems they can still mow lawns. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has surfaced in Brussels after almost a month in hiding, during which U.S. officials were said to be looking for him to grill him on State Department cables on Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange, who appeared at a seminar on freedom of information, is still working on a video of a U.S. air strike that killed scores of Afghan civilians. "I have been advised by my lawyers not to travel to the US during this period."
