Having killed 29 people at a mine with the worst safety record in the business, Massey CEO Don Blankenship came to Senate hearings into the accident to blame - his greed or carelessness or brutal disregard for anything but profits? Nope - federal regulators. This guy should be in jail. Here's the legal argument for it. Insult to Injury Dept: No Republicans turned up for the hearing.

The Only Human Response
In Cannes for the premiere of his new film about security contractors in Iraq, the U.K.'s tireless Ken Loach called for Mssrs. Bush and Blair to be tried as war criminals. Loach, 73, has said he made the film "Route Irish" largely out of anger - "anger on behalf of the people who are not in a position to express it" - over the war. On a waterboarding scene in the film: "My only fear is that we didn't make it tough enough.... This is what we and our allies do. The only human response is anger and disgust and sometimes you have to show it. You can't be too refined about it."

A new movement seeks to declare ecocide - the destruction of or damage to an ecosystem - a fifth international crime against peace, making corporations punishable by the U.N.'s International Criminal Court. The BP oil spill would be up first; those destroying the Alberta tar sands, the Amazon rain forest and other areas could be next.
